Ah, I am so happy when things work out the way I want them to.
Last night's book club was, in my opinion, perfection.
Jess read my mind and made enchiladas and sangria and guacamole again and it was better than I remember.
The weather cooperated and we sat outside and chatted and enjoyed a beautiful night, Copper the dog gave lots of kisses and snuggles.
Ah.
Lovely.
As for the book, only ladies read it, which was okay, and kind of what I expected.
I would chalk it up under a 'chick book' but not in a bad way.
The book, Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons, was a book, about a book club, based in MN.
Granted it was a fictional street over by Lake Nokomis but still.
Things I found interesting: the concept of time and friendships evolving over the course of 30 years.
How a group of women can change and friendships between them can be so fluid.
One thing that intrigued me and we did not bring up, I forgot, honestly: Who was telling the story?
Faith had letters to her mother interspersed throughout the book even when it wasn't her chapter. Some of the women 'wrote' in 1st person, some of the chapters were 3rd.
I tried to keep track and I don't think any of them evolved FROM 3rd TO 1st... I don't think.
Things I didn't like: I thought the characters themselves were kind of flat, even the title was frustrating. The self-deprecating bon bon eating concept is over done and has kind of turned backward on itself. It's not quite the eff you that it used to be in the face of chauvinism.
It felt like every character married an asshole, and the one who wasn't an asshole came off as super weak, cowed by his bra-burning self-proclaimed feminist of a wife. I think its unrealistic to show only the extremes.
I was intrigued by Faith's dilemma - her dark past seemed a bit contrived, I can understand the guilt she felt but I can't imagine the effort and compounded guilt she added to herself by making up a fake history and promoting it to her kids!
Ah!
Anyway, that's my take.
Up next Mike and Rachel will be hosting their first CPBC, exciting!
Can't wait to see what books are coming up next.
Anyone have any good reads in the mean time?
I'm reading Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins of Hunger Games fame.
Skewed a bit younger for the audience, it's a 5 book series that I am liking so far.
Discussing Divergent with my sis just made me want to read it again, great book.
I am actually excited for that movie to come out.
Also, Ender's Game comes out this November, I smell a CPBC Field Trip!
The cast looks pretty kick ass if I do say so myself.
Until then,
Stay literary!
